How To Quiet Your Mind Through Meditation

“The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear” – Rumi

As I sit down to write this, Rumi’s words resonate in my head. I understand the truth in this simple, yet profound statement. Not by thinking about what this means or analyzing it for the one-hundredth time, but by just becoming quiet and letting it come to me freely. I realize that when I am at my best at whatever I am doing, whether it be coaching a client, giving a lecture or writing as I am now, I am at my best because my mind is still and I am in a moment of allowing the words to come to me. The times when I find myself struggling is when I am trying attempting to force the words out or trying too hard to create something.

To understand the words of the great Sufi poet Rumi, try quieting your mind while just meditating on the sentence “The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.” Breathe slowly and deeply and then do nothing in the moment except listen to how your mind and body experience the words. For me a deep peace comes over my body and I am still. The bible says it well, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Try this today, don’t judge or criticize, just be in the moment and listen. Not to the chaos in your head, but rather to the wisdom in your heart. Anytime you find your mind thinking or analyzing, just turn down the volume to that voice and replace its chatter with silence. If you are still having trouble silencing your thought then silently in the back of your mind just think, “ahh” while sending your focus into your breathing. Notice you’re the soft rising and falling of your chest as you continue to think “ahh.”

It is natural to struggle when you first begin to become quiet. Your mind wants to fill the silence with chatter. That’s okay. Just return to silence when you notice your chatter box attempting to take over. Do not concern yourself with how long you can clear your thoughts, just in the fact that they become clear them for whatever length of time. With practice your ability to quiet your mind will improve. In this place of silence listen, really listen and you might be very surprised at what you find.
